Transmission fluid functions somewhat like engine oil. It cools and lubricates critical components of the transmission like gears, valves and clutches. If transmission fluid gets too low, shifting can be less smooth and you may notice random surges. Coolant is another fluid to monitor. It helps the engine stay cool in summer and prevents it from freezing in winter. It can degrade over time so it should be changed about every 50,000 miles.
