Two Genesis sedans, the G80 and the G90, look alike in a photo but do very different jobs. At Genesis of the South Shore in West Islip, the conversation usually comes down to three things: who rides with you, how you drive, and how much car your garage can hold. Here's how to read the trims, what the bigger G90 adds, and how to decide without second-guessing yourself.
Start Here: Two Sedans, Two Jobs
A sedan is a car with four doors and a separate, closed trunk, and Genesis builds two of them at very different sizes. The G80 is the midsize luxury sedan, built around the driver and a family of five. Above it sits the G90, the brand's flagship, which simply means its top model. It's larger and puts more of its attention on the people riding in back.
A few shopping terms come up constantly. Trim is the word for a version of the same model with its own engine or equipment. On the G80 you'll see names like 2.5T AWD and 3.5T PRESTIGE BLACK AWD. MSRP stands for manufacturer's suggested retail price, which is the sticker starting point before taxes, fees and any offers. AWD means all-wheel drive, so the car can send power to all four wheels instead of two.
So the real question isn't which car is better. It's which job you need done. One is a comfortable, quick car you drive yourself most days. The other is a large, quiet sedan where the back seat matters as much as the front.
Reading the G80 Lineup
Every 2027 G80 comes with all-wheel drive and seats five, so your choice is really about engine and equipment. In each trim name, the number is the engine size in liters, and the T stands for turbo.
The 2.5T trims
Three trims share the four-cylinder engine: the 2.5T AWD, 2.5T ADVANCED AWD and 2.5T SPORT PRESTIGE AWD. Moving up that ladder adds equipment and styling, not power. All three make 300 hp, so you're paying for comfort and features rather than speed.
Fuel economy is rated two ways. City mpg covers stop-and-go driving, and highway mpg covers steady cruising. This engine is rated at 20 city and 29 highway, the better of the two G80 engines.
The 3.5T trims
The 3.5T SPORT PRESTIGE AWD and 3.5T PRESTIGE BLACK AWD use a V6 rated at 375 hp. That extra power is the reason to choose them. You get stronger passing on the highway and an easy feel when the car is full.
The tradeoff is fuel economy, at 16 city and 24 highway. Prices run from $59,450 for the 2.5T AWD to $80,150 for the 3.5T PRESTIGE BLACK AWD, and you can compare what's here now in our new Genesis inventory.
What the G90 Adds, and Whether It Fits
Think of the G90 as the G80's bigger sibling. It's longer and roomier, and more of its design goes into rear-seat comfort, quiet and the sense of occasion when someone climbs in. If you regularly drive clients, parents or grown kids, the back seat is where the G90 earns its keep.
Size is also why your driveway belongs in this decision. Before you fall for either car, measure your garage itself, not just its door:
- Length from the back wall to the closed door, minus room for bikes, shelves or a freezer
- Width with both front doors open, since luxury sedans tend to have long doors
- Turning room in the driveway if you back out onto a busy street
Bring those measurements with you and we'll check them against the actual cars. Plenty of older Long Island homes have garages built for smaller cars, and a midsize G80 usually fits more easily than a flagship sedan.
On price, expect the G90 to sit above even the top G80 trims. For current G90 availability before you visit, you can reach our sales team and we'll tell you what's coming in.
Living With Either Car on the South Shore
Daily driving tells you more than any brochure. Picture your real week: lights on Sunrise Highway, a run on the Southern State, maybe a summer trip over the Robert Moses Causeway.
For mostly local errands and commuting, a 2.5T G80 makes a lot of sense. Its fuel ratings lead the lineup, and its power is plenty for merging. If you spend long stretches on the Long Island Expressway or heading into the city, a V6 G80 or a G90 feels more relaxed and unhurried at speed.
All-wheel drive on every G80 helps with traction on wet roads and the occasional snowy morning. Good tires still matter most in winter, so treat AWD as help, not a replacement for proper rubber.
Ownership counts as much as the first test drive. Luxury cars reward regular maintenance, and we offer Complimentary Service Valet to make that maintenance easier to fit into a busy week. When it's time, you can book service online and pick a slot that works for you.
New, Pre-Owned or Certified: Ways to Buy
You have more than one path to a Genesis sedan here. Genesis of the South Shore offers new, pre-owned and Genesis Certified Pre-Owned vehicles. Pre-owned simply means used. Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) means a used car that has gone through a manufacturer inspection program and typically carries added warranty coverage, so it falls between new and used in price and peace of mind.
Maybe the trim, color or package you want isn't on the lot. We offer factory ordering when the build you want isn't in stock, which helps with a 3.5T PRESTIGE BLACK AWD in a particular color or a G90 equipped exactly your way.
Money questions come next. Your rate and terms depend on your credit and the lender, so no one can promise approval ahead of time. You can still get a clear picture by exploring financing options before you come in. Have a car to trade? Knowing its value early shows you what you'll actually spend.
